I’m going to share with you 9 types of nursing jobs work from home and what companies are hiring these positions?

Number 1 Medical Call Center

Typically Medical Call Center nurses perform telephone triage, give medical advice, or check on patients’ well-being and health habits. Now, what is a telephone triage nurse?

Is the person charged with everything from working with patients to determine if they need to seek emergency treatment, to instructing them to make an appointment with a doctor, to advising them how to treat themselves at home.

Insurance companies and medical BPOs (business process outsourcers) hire nurses for these types of jobs, which are typically employment positions and some hire independent contractors.

Training is usually done online from home, and most often these jobs are for RNs and BSNs, RN stands for register nurse and BSN stand for bachelor degree of science in nursing.

Is the salary difference between RN vs BSN degrees? Those who hold a BSN degree are likely to make more than RN’s who only have their associates degree.

A BSN degree is favored over just an associate’s degree for many entry-level nursing jobs, therefore a BSN has more opportunities to make more money.

Number 2 Case Manager

Nurses tasked is to the evaluation and implementation of health care plans for individual patients. They are concerned with providing effective and efficient medical care while managing the costs of treatment.

Case managers coordinate care for patients, often for large insurance companies. This home-based job which might include care coordinator, patient advocate, utilization review RN, and Medicare and worker’s compensation specialist.

Number 3 Online Instructor/Course Developer

Online education is a growing field that is favorable for working at home. Experts are needed in every field that is taught online, and nursing is no exception.

If you are a tech-savvy nurse you can teach with your experience to help others learn new skills in distance education, you can either working as an instructor or in developing nursing courses.

If you have an MSN or a Ph.D. in nursing — you can teach online nursing classes to college students. To teach BSN coursework, you must have an MSN degree, and to teach MSN nursing classes, you must have a Ph.D.

Number 4 Legal Nurse Consultant

Legal nurse consulting is the analysis and evaluation of facts and testimony of informed opinions related to the delivery of nursing and other healthcare services and outcomes, and the nature and cause of injuries.

This related to law, such as personal injury, malpractice, worker’s comp, and more.

This type of work could range from managing and interpreting medical records to coordinate medical exams for clients.

A legal nurse consultant may be an independent contractor or may be employed by a law firm or insurance company. A BSN or a master’s degree and some legal coursework or experiences are required.

Number 5 Virtual Health Care Recruiter

medical recruiter is a hiring specialist serving the healthcare industry and who is responsible for screening potential job candidates.

In this position, you’ll search for and screen candidates for various healthcare positions. Most of these positions require a Bachelor’s degree with a healthcare background. Also, search for the keyword, Nurse Recruiter, or RN Recruiter.

Nurses in this field are often employees, and because this type of work involves mostly phone and computer use, it can often be done, at least part-time, from home.

Number 6 Health IT/Nursing Informatics

Nursing informatics is a field dedicated to delivering high-quality patient care through efficient management of data and technology systems.

Using data, an informatics nurse can analyze trends, monitor for any consistent errors, and implement new, more efficient systems.

IT jobs, in general, can often be work-at-home, but both the specific field of health IT and general IT usually require time working in an office environment and a high level of skill before transitioning to work-at-home. 

Number 7 Freelance Nursing Writers

Nursing writers write content for test prep courses, instructional manuals, and other training materials.

If you’re interested in this sort of work, other terms to search for are Nurse Certification Writers, Nurse Research Writers, Learning Development Writers, and Medical Writers.

Number 8 Virtual Clinical Research Associates

Clinical Research Associates oversee all aspects of pharmaceutical research studies, from recruiting and monitoring to budgeting and reporting.

These positions require a Bachelor’s degree, an RN nursing degree. The majority of these positions are home-based, but they do require some travel.

Number 9 Remote Quality Improvement Nurse

As a Quality Improvement Nurse, you will review hospitals’ nursing record documentation for completeness, accuracy, and appropriate level coding.

These positions usually contain a teaching element, where the nurse educates the staff on the importance of proper documentation and coding practices.

Typically requires a fair amount of travel; on some job postings, it’s 70 to 80 percent travel time.

Nurses and physicians are among the medical professions who work from home at this insurance company. Some jobs are specifically meant to be telecommuting, but other telework opportunities will be considered after working on-site for some time.

Verywell

Verywell is a health website that contracts with writers who are experts in health fields. Nurses and physicians are often hired.

Cigna

Insurance company Cigna’s division Intracorp hires RNs to work at home as disability and workers’ comp case managers.

Convance

Covance has preclinical and clinical research operations in more than 25 countries and hires clinical research associates to work at home (with at least 65% travel) in specific locations in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.

Fonemed

This company hires registered nurses from the United States and Canada to work from home to provide telephone triage and health advice to callers from across North America. It also hires on-site customer service reps, based in Newfoundland, Canada, who need a minimum of a high school diploma.

The Hartford

In addition to hiring RNs for remote telephone jobs as case managers, this insurance company hires others in non-medical jobs, such as claims representatives. Check off the option for remote jobs in the company’s job listings.

Humana

Some of its work-at-home positions have geographic requirements, and most are for registered nurses. Many of its RN positions are for field healthcare and involve visiting patients at home. It also sometimes has opportunities for medical coders, chart auditors, licensed insurance reps, accountants, physicians, writers, and salespeople.
